Initial Project Scope

Our initial project involves the following:

  • Creating an online, searchable version of Budge’s Egyptian Dictionary (vol 1 here and vol 2 here), including:
    • Creating new digital glyphs with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
    • Entering modern English translations (primary and alternate) for each glyph
  • Creating an English to heiroglyphics translator that is much more accurate than others online
  • Creating a heiroglyphics to English translator (this doesn’t currently exist anywhere)
  • Develop new image processing algorithms and programs to facilitate image/glyph decoding, including
    • Image pre-processing
    • Glyph area detection
    • Glyph matching
    • Glyph correlation
    • Language processing algorithms, including
      • Decoding of glyph groups (concepts, words, phrases)
      • Reverse glyph/text direction adjustments

At each step of the project we’ll keep people updated with new blog posts, social posts, and newsletter updates.  Although “small” in scope, this project has immense technical challenges (image recognition, language processing) and time-intensive labor costs (glyph creation, data entry, etc).

FYI, other books we are looking to use in creating the dictionary include:
